2nd Popular Race within the scope of the Palma Covenant against Gender Violence . 20/11/2009. The 2nd Popular Race within the scope of the Palma Covenant against Gender Violence will be celebrated in Palma on Sunday, 22nd November in line with the programme of events planned on the occasion of the International Day Against Violence Against Women that is celebrated every single year on 25th November.

The event will consist of a race-walk to which all citizens, associations and institutions, both private and public, are welcome to join in and walk together for the elimination of this type of violence. This symbolic action will be taking place within the scope of the initiative Palma Covenant against Gender Violence, that constitutes a social network fostering egalitarian values and providing quality support to victims of gender violence. The Covenant has been unanimously approved by all municipal political parties.

The race will be starting at Plaça de Cort at 12.10 hrs and the race course will run along 2.5 km, ending again at Plaça de Cort.

Registration: To sign up to the race, please register on the website www.pactepalma.com until 17th November. Upon registration confirmation, participants will be able to pick up their T-shirt at the Flassaders Social Centre from 9:00 hrs until 21:00 hrs. The first 500 people signing up to the race will get a race shirt with a number on it. All the following participants signing up (as of registered participant nr. 501) will be given a race number that can be pinned onto their T-shirt to be picked up at the Flassaders Social Centre during the above mentioned opening hours.

Registration will also be possible on the same day of the race (as of 10:00 hrs) at Plaça de Cort.

The 2nd Popular Race within the scope of the Palma Covenant against Gender Violence is an initiative aimed at raising the awareness of the society that has been organised by the Department for Education, Equality and Civil Rights with the support of the municipal services and the collaboration of CAM, C&A, Decathlon and the Athletics Federation.

Everyone joining the Race will be given a gift (an apron). Besides, the top three female winners and the top three male winners of the race will be awarded a prize and a prize draw will be held among all participants of the race.

Venue: The following facilities will be set up at plaça de Cort: The finish line, the stage, the multi-purpose tents for last-minute registration, desks to hand out the numbers to be pinned on the participants' T-shirts (as of participant number 501), the stage where the prize will be awarded to the winners after the race, a snacks' stand, a cloakroom as well as a playground for children

Event Programme:

At 10:00 hrs. Registration.

At 11:00 hrs. Entertainment begins.

At 11:45 hrs. Performance of giants and caparrots (giant folkloric heads)

At 11:55 hrs. Reading of the Covenant.

At 12:00 hrs. Race start

At 12:30 hrs. The authorities and representatives of the associated entities will be asked to come to the stage.

Entertainment activities: The performance of the percussion group 'Tamborers per la Pau' (Drummers for Peace) will be accompanying the Race. Besides, the association 'Grup de Geganters de la Sala' will be animating the event at the start/finish line at plaça de Cort with two giants, 'caparrots', bagpipes and many other musical instruments.

The Mounted Police from the City Council of Palma will escort the event with the spectacular presence of their horses. Children will be able to play in the bouncing castles sponsored by the Municipal Sports Institute (IME).
